Exploring the PNW wine region

I have always enjoyed my glass, let me be honest, glasses of wine without giving too much thought to the process other than the price of the bottle. When travelling, I like to order local wines at restaurants, but again the decision-making usual goes as follow: grab the menu, scroll down to find the red wine section, local wine preferably Pinot Noir and finally price.

Living in Washington state I am surrounded by over 1,000 wineries (according to Washington State Wine Commission). I am interested in visiting them and go wine tasting but I also want to know about the wine making process. The whole concept can be intimidating so I decided why not start from the basics.

Two weeks ago, I spent most of my Saturday in a classroom at the DeLILLE Cellars in Woodinville, WA taking the WSET 1 course – An Introduction to wine. I first arrived at the place a little bit nervous but also excited about learning. I was put at ease quickly by our instructor and the group of people that like me came to the training room with a desire to learn more about wine. After the around the table introductions the morning started with learning the basics; what is wine? growing grapes, making wines etc. When we came back from our lunch break it was time to learn about pairing wine and food. This was a on hands training, and yes that means that we got to taste wine and paired it with food. The class ended with a 30-question exam. We will not get our results for a few weeks. Regardless, if I pass the test or not, the experience was great.

I left the classroom wanting to continue learning and reassured that this is what I want to do now.

Until my next post, cheers!
